Short Description:
Mindful awareness has been scientifically proven to promote social, emotional and physical well-being, and is an effective part of treatment to prevent relapse of drug addiction and chronic depression. Mindfulness also enhances empathy, and in that way may promote healthy interpersonal relationships. This ancient practice of being fully aware in the present moment, without grasping onto judgments, has been found in cultures around the world. At the heart of this proposal is that the state of mindful awareness harnesses specific social and emotional circuits in the brain. The development of these “resonance circuits” creates an integrated brain state that creates the benefits of improved immune and cardiac function, enhanced empathy and self-understanding, and a deeper connection to oneself and others.

The majority of people who seek psychiatric care have histories of trauma, chaos or neglect. Advances in the neurosciences, attachment research and in information processing show how brain function is shaped by experience, and that life itself can continually transform perception and biology. Overwhelming experiences alter the capacity for selfregulation and memory processing due to changes in sub-cortical, i.e., “unconscious” levels of the brain.

Effective treatment of post-traumatic problems needs to include addressing the imprint of trauma on the physical experience of the self as helpless and in danger. Recovery needs to incorporate dealing with defensive efforts that helped ensure survival, incorporate physical experiences that contradict feelings and sensations associated with helplessness and disconnection, as well as an effective way of integrating fragmented memories of trauma. Experiencing physical mastery (as in yoga and specific body based techniques) often is necessary to initiate new ways of perceiving reality and promote new behavior patterns.

The story of sex in committed modern couples is one that often tells of a dwindling desire that includes a long list of sexual alibis, claiming to explain the inescapable death of Eros. The absence of fantasy, the proliferation of pornography and affairs, as well as a lack of understanding of the nature of erotic desire all contribute to the predicament. This workshop examines the cultural pressures that shape domesticated sex and the puzzling inverse correlation between greater emotional intimacy and the loss of sexual desire.

Short Description:
Is our brain built for love or war, connection or self-preservation? The attachment drive for a secure base involves neurological and neuro-endocrine systems and subsystems that determine such things as proximity seeking and contact maintenance. Couples most commonly enter therapy due to repeated, anticipated, and intense periods of mutual dysregulation whereby attachment injuries and adaptations become reanimated. In order to make the most of attachment theory, the psychotherapist must incorporate a working knowledge of the neurobiological processes that underlie all primary attachment relationships.

Couples’ expectations about the role of sexuality in intimate relationships have changed dramatically over the past 40 years. We will explore the main ideas of the romantic ideal: how we want our partner to fulfill our needs for connection, belonging and continuity, as well as give the sense of transcendence, mystery and passion. Examining the cultural values of love and respect, freedom and responsibility, and interdependence vs. autonomy, we will map a culturally relevant approach to work with the dilemmas of desire in couples. We also will probe the difference between clearly assigned gender role repartition and the post-feminist egalitarian model.

Comparisons have been made between severe avoidant attachment and disorders of the self such as antisocial personality, schizoid personality, and narcissistic personality. Each of these disorders, including avoidant attachment, can be grouped together as one-person psychological organizations in that they operate outside of a truly interactive dyadic system, and primarily rely upon themselves for stimulation and calming via auto-regulation. The chronic need for “alone time” can take many surprising forms throughout the lifespan, directly impacting romantic relationships.

Clients often request changes in mood and perspective. Traditionally, changing mood and perspective is accomplished by educating clients about their patterns, encouraging them to change their behaviors and thoughts. But, experiential methods can be more immediately effective. All art is, by definition "experiential." And altering mood and perspective is the point of it - whether drama, painting, literature, dance, or music. Movies use multilayered methods for change. The viewer is often unaware of the intricate dramatic, experiential methods that filmmakers use to exert influence.

The reason why most couples' characteristic fights never get resolved is because in our most heated moments, we stop fighting with each other. Core negative images (CNIs) start fighting and the two real partners get lost. This workshop teaches participants how to help partners identify, make explicit, accept, and ultimately work with one another's core negative images. As partners are taught to utilize each other's CNIs, rather than fight them, all sorts of creative and deliberating possibilities emerge.

No other aspect in the lives of couples, today as well as yesterday, generates more fascination, gossip and fear as infidelity. In our society, sexual infidelity is mostly seen as a symptom of a relationship gone awry. The revelation of an affair can trigger a crisis that shakes the very foundation of trust and connection in the couple. The purpose of this workshop is to present a multi-cultural, non-judgmental perspective to probe the meanings of affairs, rethink fidelity, and address the complexities of marriage, sex, intimacy, and monogamy. We will look at the value and the price of honesty and truth telling, and explore the circuitous ways affairs aim to stabilize a marriage and prevent the dissolution of the family.

The notion of a relational or transpersonal "field" is an important emerging concept in Brief Therapy. A "field" is a type of space or energy produced by relationships and interactions in a system that often holds deeper, more archetypal information. It is similar to what Gregory Bateson referred to as a "larger mind" and "the pattern which connects." This workshop will explore methods to recognize and work with such fields as part of a Brief Therapy session.

Changing mood and perspective is central in brief therapy. Experiential methods can be more immediately effective than traditional didactic approaches. All art is, by definition, "experiential." Altering mood and perspective is the point of it - whether drama, painting, literature, dance or music. Movies use multilayered methods for change. The viewer is often unaware of the intricate dramatic, experiential techniques that filmmakers use to exert influence. Social psychology studies the way in which people are influenced outside of awareness.

Short Description:
A key idea in Milton Erickson's work was that a person's problematic experiences and behaviors can be skillfully accepted and utilized as the basis for therapeutic change. Self-relations psychotherapy develops this idea further, emphasizing symptoms as indicating the death of an old identity and the impending birth of a new identity. Thus, we don't try to "get rid of" depression, anxiety, or other "acting out/acting in" expressions, but instead invite them into a human relationship of "sponsorship", where their healing and helpful nature may be realized. In this workshop, we will see how a therapist can generate a ritual space where symptoms and other disturbing experiences can be "midwifed" into new identities.

Short Description:
The challenge of personal transformation is faced differently in the East and West. Typically, Eastern meditation emphasizes how to cultivate higher states of consciousness that "go beyond" ego identifications, while Western therapy focuses on how to "work through" problematic states. This workshop explores an integrative model that suggests how to use both approaches in a complementary way: sometimes "transcending, sometimes "transforming", and often doing both at the same time. The connection between meditation, generative trance, and selfrelations will be a central focus.

In the literature, music and drama, artists often covertly foreshadow impending events. In social psychology there are myriad studies of priming, an effect by which the accessibility of a future target is increased by the presentation of an earlier cue. Priming effects illuminate important facets of interpersonal responsiveness. Milton Erickson was the first therapist to seed future ideas in the course of strategic therapy and hypnosis. Seeding is an important concept that can increase the effectiveness of interventions regardless of the technique that will be used. We will learn to harness seeding methods through lecture, demonstration and practice.

Being transparent means to share all relevant information with our clients in a way that is timely and valid. It means sharing the reasoning and intent underlying our statements, questions and actions. When you are transparent you create better results because clients understand your thinking. Therapy no longer needs to be based on mysterious, privileged knowledge – this is, after all, the age of Google, when anyone can get any question answered in a matter of seconds. Therapists need to step up and share as much of their knowledge and thinking as possible. Examples and case stories will illustrate how therapists can become transparent.

In this workshop, guidelines will be presented for recognizing which patients are most likely to benefit from a single session and how we can provide it successfully. A structure will be presented for organizing the specific tasks and skills involved in different phases of therapy (pre-, early, middle, late, follow-through). Case examples, some on videotape, will illustrate brief therapy techniques applicable in a one-session-at-a-time therapy and in the course of longer treatments.

Short Description:
This second of two workshops will demonstrate the use of informal trance in couple therapy. PACT therapists use of posing (partners holding stationary positions) as a major therapeutic tool for both the couple and therapist in managing arousal, attention, and for inducing trance states. Attendees will learn a common PACT approach to inducing informal trance states in partners using what’s been termed, The Lovers Pose. Partners go into a deeper state whereby the therapist can probe, prod, and investigate more implicit issues that plague the relationship. Attendees will view clinical video demonstrations as well as live demonstrations to further illustrate this technique.
