Treating anxiety with hypnosis often focuses on relaxation and calmness; and while physiological regulation is an important anxiety-managing skill, hypnotic interventions with anxious clients offer rich opportunities to shift the relationship and responses people have to anxiety and worry. Hypnosis can introduce important cognitive skills that interrupt the process of worry and anxiety while creating an experience of malleability.

Short Description:
Milton Erickson did fascinating work with deep states of hypnosis. Neuroscience has caught up to what he knew; that the mind/brain reorganizes memory and develops creative solutions in deep states of trance. In these deep states, the brain releases a neuropeptide called "anandamide," a Sanskrit word for bliss, which has healing qualities for difficult problems. This demonstration shows a method for accomplishing this healing state.

Short Description:
Working at the Department of Speech Pathology, University Clinic, Heidelberg Germany in the 80s, most patients with voice disorders came with expectations getting medical treatment. But resistance to psychological approaches were common. Being confronted with this resistance many times created a very indirect approach of self-hypnosis training (which actually is a trance induction). Tailoring the standard approach to different patients and symptoms will be discussed, as well as how to use this in group therapy.

How a clinician thinks about the nature of depression and answers fundamental questions - such as what causes depression - naturally determine what treatment approach he or she is most likely to take. Regardless of one’s preferred orientation, however, depression experts agree that treatment needs to be multi-dimensional and active. Furthermore, the more we learn about the neuroscience of depression, especially neuroplasticity and neurogenesis, the more important well designed experiential learning processes become in treatment.

Contrary to the popular mythology, what makes hypnosis valuable is its ability as a tool to create a safe and comfortable context for self-exploration. As a direct consequence, people routinely find overlooked or dormant resources that would help empower them to not only feel better but be better. In this demonstration, we'll explore how hypnosis might be helpful in increasing a sense of personal empowerment.

Short Description:
Is there any doubt that people learn more easily through experience when they’re focused and receptive? Or that growth is easier when rigid perceptions and boundaries of experience are softened and redefined? Hypnosis highlights the malleability of subjective experience and empowers people to live their best lives. In the past, hypnosis was considered by many to be the “crazy cousin nobody wanted at the therapy family picnic.” But, as the contributions of hypnosis in neuroscience (especially neurogenesis and neuroplasticity), epigenetics, clinical effectiveness, and interpersonal dynamics have steadily grown in importance, hypnosis can be identified as a core component of good therapy in whatever form it may be delivered.

Short Description:
Therapists working with single mothers often hear stories of abandonment, disempowerment, loneliness, hopelessness, victimization, rage and unrelenting stress. Disturbing perceptions and emotions such as these, and the distorted interpretations that result, may rigidify into psychic schemas comprised of patterns of dysfunctional reacting and compromised coping. Identifying negative schemas, and harnessing the mind’s powerful potential to transform them, will be the dual focus of this course. Participants will explore the way in which the quiet mind, combined with the evocative and rhythmic language of hypnosis, can fuel a subconscious shift from confusion to clarity. Participants will experience the way in which sympathetic identification with transformed metaphors, drawn from the substance of personal stories, can fuel an alchemical shift that decreases stress, increases ego strength, and paves the way to inner peace.
