There are currently over 400 specific approaches to psychotherapy and many therapeutic tribes. Attachment theory and science with its intrapsychic and relational focus offers the therapist a broad, integrative but systematic guide to the nature of dysfunction and health and how to move individuals, couples and families from one to the other. This presentation will offer a guide as to how this science can help to make our sessions relevant and on target in terms of leading to better affect regulation, cognitive coherence and supportive, stable relationships.

There is a deafening silence concerning mate selection in relationship therapy. Do we dare talk about what research says works–and doesn’t work? Are we afraid any insight might be used to justify leaving a good-enough relationship? While we all know relationships which defy logic, there are clear principles which can increase the probability of a more perfect union. These and other research facts will be explored.

Short Description:
All couples and couples therapies struggle with issues of mixed loyalties. At any given moment, do I choose my own fulfillment as an individual or do I yield to the needs of the relationship? Is it a zero-sum game in which one partner wins and one loses – and if not, how else can we think about it? This keynote address introduces a model integrating both attachment and differentiation in couples therapy through the idea of enlightened self-interest – taking care of yourself by taking care of the relationship – as well as a model of healthy sacrifice, which is missing in our contemporary, Narcissistic culture.

Short Description:
Research confirms our clinical experience. We can teach partners all manner of skills but in moments of triggering, emotional flooding, skills go out the window. Why? Because we are no longer in our adult selves. Our thinking brain has shut down and the limbic system has taken over. An inner child part has seized the wheel. This workshop introduces a model of working with the traumatized parts of the partners we treat by empowering individuals to come into conscious relationship with those parts—loving, understanding, and ultimately containing them.

She then focuses on her brain scanning research (using fMRI) on romantic rejection and the trajectory of love addiction following rejection. She concludes with discussion of the brain circuits associated with long-term partnership happiness and the future of relationships in the digital age—what she calls “slow love.”

Short Description:
This one-hour presentation will demonstrate cross-dialogic and other strategic techniques for shepherding couples toward secure functioning, an attitudinal and behavioral expectation that couples operate as a two-person psychological system. Because the concept of secure-functioning is principle based and not personality based, the success of secure-functioning relationships does not depend upon attachment orientation. The presentation will endeavor to help the clinician utilize psychobiological strategies to help clarify partner attachment strategies, true desires, and unspoken agendas in couple therapy.

Short Description:
The psychobiologically oriented couple therapist understands that the intersubjective, phenomenological process operating in primary attachment relationships relies heavily on fast acting implicit memory systems. Because of this phenomenon partners in a relationship rarely know what they are doing or why, and so they confabulate meaning in the absence of real understanding. Additionally, partners in couple therapy maintain hidden agendas and use deception in order to protect themselves from loss.

Milton Erickson did fascinating work with deep states of hypnosis. Neuroscience has caught up to what he knew; that the mind/brain reorganizes memory and develops creative solutions in deep states of trance. In these deep states, the brain releases a neuropeptide called "anandamide," a Sanskrit word for bliss, which has healing qualities for difficult problems. This demonstration shows a method for accomplishing this healing state.

Working at the Department of Speech Pathology, University Clinic, Heidelberg Germany in the 80s, most patients with voice disorders came with expectations getting medical treatment. But resistance to psychological approaches were common. Being confronted with this resistance many times created a very indirect approach of self-hypnosis training (which actually is a trance induction). Tailoring the standard approach to different patients and symptoms will be discussed, as well as how to use this in group therapy.

Short Description:
In the treatment of the effects of trauma, its inherent relationship with spirituality provides a vital link in the therapeutic process. The understanding of a person’s felt, spiritual connection is central to the therapeutic process. If we are unable to access a person’s spirituality, we may find ourselves trapped, as therapists, in areas that are fraught with pitfalls and “tight corners.” The intimate association between trauma and spirituality suggests therapeutic avenues that support the authentic transformation of traumatic experiences. Through the use of didactic material- including brain research, experiential practice incorporating the bodily “felt-sense,” and video material, we will introduce Somatic Experiencing® as a way to reconnect with the deep self. The focus will be on developing practical tools to gracefully enhance the relationship between trauma and spirituality within the therapeutic experience.

Can we describe a “healthy mind”? Defining mind as an “embodied and relational process that regulates the flow of energy and information” allows us to move deeply into understanding new ways of seeing the interconnections among brain, interpersonal relationships and the mind. Dr. Siegel outlines strategies to monitor and modify energy and information flow with more clarity and power, and also describes how the concept of integration can serve as an organizing principle that illuminates mindsight, harmony, resilience, and vitality.

Short Description:
Early childhood trauma has lasting and dramatic effects on attachment formation and on the later capacity for intimacy and mutuality. Instead of experiencing relationships as a haven of safety, traumatized couples are driven by powerful wishes for and fears of closeness. By using somatic and mindfulness-based interventions, conflictual patterns are disrupted, allowing couples to address the intense responses and impulsive reactions that undermine all sense of safety and hope and recreate the experience of threat in the body and in the relationship.

CC17 Workshop 10 - Beyond Words: Somatic Interventions for Couples Treatment - Janina Fisher, PhD In traumatized couples, talking about 'what happened' often evokes more conflict than empathy and does not alter their habitual trauma-related animal defense survival responses of fight, flight, freeze, submission, or cry for help. By teaching couples to observe their somatic responses to each other and to use gesture instead of words, the language of blame is inhibited. In addition, somatic interventions regulate the body and nervous system, which reduces each partner's sense of threat. Without words, each partner can be taught the ability to simultaneously open and protect the heart - creating a sense of safety for self and other.

Short Description:
CC17 Workshop 15 - Healing the Fragmented Self in Couples Treatment - Janina Fisher, PhD Couples enter relationships with unconscious hopes that these will be reparative, that their wounded child selves will finally experience the cherishing for which they have longed. As each triggers or disappoints the other's hurt child selves, protector parts rise to the defense with anger, withdrawal, threats, or shame. In this model, couples are helped to identify hurt, angry, fearful feelings as communications from young parts and their vigorous defensive responses as those of protector parts. By having a way to 'hover above' their conflicts, 'own' hurt and disappointment as the feelings of a young child, and take responsibility for their fight/flight behavior, couples develop a new language that promotes safety and closeness.

But pathologizing one partner’s porn use while legitimizing the grievances of the consumer’s partner violates our commitment to neutrality — and more importantly, it doesn’t help the couple. To address porn-related issues more effectively, this workshop will focus on treating intrapsychic conflicts and power struggles over porn use.
