Short Description:
"This demonstration will show how activating a client's creative process is the key factor in generative psychotherapy. This process follows these steps: (1) Opening a creative safe space (2) Identifying a goal (A positive change or transforming a negative pattern) (3) Identifying and welcoming both obstacles and resources (4) Weaving and integrating the parts into a new "mosaic of self" (5) Orienting to future application of changes. Therapy is successful when clients are able to experientially realize positive life changes. While the identification and transformation of symptoms is important in this regard, the activation of the client's creative capacity to change is even more important. This paper outlines 6 steps in this therapeutic process: (1) opening a mindful field, (2) setting positive intentions, (3) developing and maintaining a creative state, (4) identifying a "storyboard" for achieving goals, (5) transforming negative experiences, and (6) everyday practices. Our beliefs exert a very powerful force on our behavior. Our beliefs about ourselves and what is possible in the world around us greatly impact our capacity for change and healing. Limiting beliefs, or belief barriers, can act like an invisible force that interfere with our capacity to be resourceful and trap us in unhealthy patterns of behavior. Empowering beliefs help us to identify and take best advantage of potential opportunities. This demonstration will show how to identify and transform belief barriers by integrating somatic and emotional intelligence to create an empowering "belief bridge."

Latina women tend to be stereotyped as fiery and fierce, yet the quality that consistently shines through is strength. Latinas continue to demonstrate their resilience and fortitude in every discipline and field such as science, the arts, law, politics, and of course, in their personal lives. Contemporary Latinas are moving beyond the expected roles rooted in propriety and appearances, and towards the empowered and inspiring women they are, expressing self-determination and leadership in many contexts. At the same time, there is the angst of finding, managing multiple identities, and responding to pulls from different corners of life. Familismo emphasizes on a strong family unit and Marianismo emphasizes purity, self-sacrifice, and nurturance of others. These internalized expectations can create internal struggles at key developmental decision-making points in life.

When people face the reality of tragic loss through death, they commonly struggle to process both the "event story" of what has transpired, and to access the "back story" of the relationship with the deceased to negotiate the liminal sense of the loved one's presence within absence. This calls for creative and intuitive therapy that respects the profound assault on the person's world of meaning, but that uses the healing power of imagination, body work and the conjuring of restorative connections to promote resilience.

Somatic Modeling has to do with the organization of our physiology and "body language." Somatic Modeling focuses more on the form and deeper organization of body language than it does on its content. One of the primary objectives of Somatic Modeling is to mobilize and utilize the "wisdom of the body." A fundamental principle of Somatic Modeling is that there is information and wisdom in the body and knowledge in "the muscle." It is a way to access and take advantage of the full capacity of "the brain in our body." This session will explore how to apply Somatic Modeling as a key process for gathering information and finding resources in a therapy session.

Join two therapists as they trace the evolution of their thinking from being team members who helped develop the Solution Focused Brief Therapy model through today. Is it a product of environmental and situational influences? Or both? This conversation will explore these questions and others as well.

Is technology changing love? Why do you fall in love with one person rather than another? Why is the rejected brain primed for psychotherapy? How can you use neuroscience to keep love alive? And where are we headed in our digital age? Anthropologist and neuroscientist Dr. Helen Fisher uses her brain scanning work (fMRI) to discuss three basic brain systems that evolved for mating and reproduction--the sex drive, romantic love, and attachment; each plays a pivotal role in human health and happiness. And she uses her data on 50,000 single Americans to explain a new (and positive) trend in courtship, what she calls “slow love.” She then discusses her data on the biological foundations of human personality—specifically four basic styles of thinking and behaving that impact love relationships and all other social interactions.

"Sometime between the years 2030 and 2050 Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) will become a numerical majority in society. It will become increasingly difficult for mental health professionals, and educators not to encounter clients and students who differ from them in terms of race, ethnicity and culture. Difficult dialogues on race and other sociodemographic identities (gender, sexual orientation or identity) have often served to polarize and obstruct mutual understanding rather than to clarify and increase mutual understanding. Most well intentioned people (mental health providers, educators and others) find themselves ill prepared to deal with the often-explosive race or gender related emotions that manifest themselves in interpersonal interactions and in employment and other public spaces.

We are on the cusp of a new revolution that will change mental health care forever. The End of Mental Illness discards an outdated, stigmatizing paradigm and replaces it with a modern brain-based, whole-person program rooted in science and hope. No one is shamed for cancer or diabetes; likewise, no one should be shamed for depression and other brain health/mental health issues. Based on the world's largest functional brain imaging database, Dr. Amen will give you a completely new way to think about and treat issues such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorders, ADHD, addictions, OCD, PTSD, schizophrenia and even personality disorders.

"In the United States, the omnipresence of racial bias and bigotry has led many to question the reasons for their persistence in light of widespread public condemnation. Social scientists have proposed a number of reasons for people’s failure to act: (a) the invisibility of modern forms of bias, (b) trivializing an incident as innocuous, (c) diffusion of responsibility, (d) fear of repercussions or retaliation, and (e) the paralysis of not knowing what to do. This presentation is aimed at addressing the last reason by providing participants with a repertoire of anti-bias strategies and tactics to overcome the expressions of microaggressions.

What can mental health professionals do to enhance their performance? Available evidence makes clear that attending a typical continuing education workshop, specializing in the treatment of a particular problem, or learning a new treatment model does little to improve effectiveness. In fact, studies to date indicate clinical effectiveness actually declines with time and experience in the field. The key to improved performance is engaging in deliberate practice. At this workshop, the latest research on deliberate practice will be translated into concrete steps all clinicians can immediately apply in their efforts to achieve better results.

Gestalt therapy envisions a radical conception of the self as temporal and emergent. This means it is a fluid self, continually changing through creative adjustment to its changing contacts with the world. One could think of the self in Gestalt therapy as an unending aesthetic project: Like all experience, it has to be made and remade as it navigates the passing of time. And it is reflexive, being both creator and created.

Dr. Hayes will explain the error and show how it limits the good that psychology can do for the world. He will then examine a small number of areas of research where significant progress has been made by correcting the problem.

Creating lasting and ecological change frequently involves interventions on multiple interconnected levels such as: environment, behaviors, capabilities, beliefs, values, identity and sense of purpose. Working with these different levels involves different dynamics and produces a different degree of impact. It is important to have a road map and toolbox for how to influence clients at all of these levels. This session will explore the different types of processes and qualities of relationship that are necessary to produce change at multiple levels.

Increasingly more and more couples are working together or working virtually in the same space. It is estimated that in the United States 43% of small businesses are family-run and 53% of managers share day-to-day management with a spouse. Working together tends to kill romance and take over a couples life. As therapists we tend to look at our clients mainly through the lens of our favorite therapy model. However, couples who work together face unique challenges that are not rooted in attachment styles or family of origin conflicts. Ellyn will delineate 6 foundational skills that support couples who work together and demonstrate how the business can become a source of connection rather than generating stress and disconnection. Short Description:
In this presentation, we’ll examine the notion of “connection” and its correlation with mental health. When we feel disconnected from our inner life, we suffer; when we are disconnected relationally—from people and nature—we can become anxious, depressed, despondent. What is this powerful “connection” actually made of, what is it, and how can we take the science of connection and inform the practice of psychotherapy? In many ways, the experience of a separate, solo-self may underly the many challenges we face, from racism and social injustice to environmental destruction. The field of mental health can play a pivotal role in how we help our human family move toward a new way of living on Earth by addressing the modern cultural excessive focus on individuality in the separate sense of self.

Short Description:
Mindfulness isn't a therapy in its own right, but its capacity for improving the quality of people's lives has received substantial empirical support as a class of meaningful interventions, particularly when embedded in a substantive therapeutic framework. Guided mindfulness meditation as a focusing strategy shares some key characteristics with clinical hypnosis, guided imagery, positive psychology, and other such focus-related approaches, but usually has a different aim in its application. This speech explores these overlaps when mindfulness is applied to a goal-oriented treatment process. This is NOT a speech about spiritual exploration with mindfulness. Rather, the focus is entirely on clinical applications of key aspects of mindfulness by deconstructing the hypnotic elements of such processes. We will identify the therapeutically relevant components of guided meditations, and how we can construct more meaningful interventions by incorporating them in novel ways.

"As advances are made in better understanding the power of focus in shaping one's subjective perceptions and even one's physiology, the field of clinical hypnosis has played an especially important role in this ongoing process of discovery. Despite too many clinicians' terribly misinformed dismissal of hypnosis as little more than a gimmick, in fact hypnosis has evolved a strong scientific basis arising from its insights into neuroscience, cognition, suggestive language and information processing, placebo and nocebo responses, the therapeutic alliance, and more. Just as there are many different models of psychotherapy, each with different foundational philosophies and methods, there are many different models of hypnosis, each with a different emphasis and utilizing different approaches. The highly innovative work of Milton Erickson in particular is widely acknowledged by therapists who may or may not use hypnosis but are definitely influenced by his strategic methods.

This workshop will present the rationale and application of play therapy with families. Family play therapy has the potential to be disarming and novel, and can decrease ambivalence to therapy, Using a combination of physical, dynamic, and expressive exercises to engage all family members, family play therapy can strengthen emotional connection, shift rigid perceptions, and utilize metaphor in order to identify and work through complex and difficult problems. Most families come to therapy with high expectations and rigid thinking and feeling patterns. Play therapy promotes laughter, joy, and possibilities.

Short Description:
When grief becomes painfully preoccupying and protracted, the problem often arises at the intersection of the death and the relationship it interrupted. Drawing on attachment-informed and Two-Track models of bereavement, we will begin by considering grieving as a process of reconstructing rather than relinquishing our bonds with those who have died, and the complicating circumstances that can interfere with this natural process. We then turn to a close analysis of a single session of therapy that releases an adult daughter from an anguishing grief that has persisted unchanged for many years, and that has insinuated itself into her life with intimate others. We begin this work by attending closely to "quality terms" in the client's narrative that poignantly convey the character of her connection with her mother, that symbolically signal the devastation caused by her death, and that function as harbingers of a more hopeful reconstructed relationship

What does it mean to be intraconnected? In weaving the internal and external, the subjective and objective, this workshop will reveal how modern culture, as well as how our brain is wired, may give us a message of separation as a solo, isolated self; yet a wider perspective unveils that who we are, what a deeper reality actually is, may be something more—broader than the brain, bigger even than the body—fundamental to the social systems and the natural world in which we live. We will explore the nature of how our experience of what we often call, self, emerges across the lifespan and how this journey into identity and belonging can help weave our personal reflections with scientific discussions into how the mind, brain, and relationships shape who we are.

Resilience is the ability of individuals to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions and to regain and maintain a sense of equilibrium. Achieving resilience during challenging times requires the development and strengthening of a variety of resources on different levels. These include emotional intelligence, behavioral flexibility, the ability to balance "dreamer" with "realist," and the capacity to connect with something bigger than ourselves. This session will address a number of important skills and processes that support the deepening of people's capacity for resilience – behaviorally, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

In offering effective psychotherapy there are times for being informative and other times for being evocative. Use information when needed; use evocative means when the target is the realization of a concept, such as responsibility, motivation, or connection. Evocative methods are used in all performing arts because the goal is to prompt a change in mood and perspective. Evocative methods will be extracted from art and applied in clinical practice. Clients coming for Couples Therapy have often been impacted by early developmental trauma, systemic or intergenerational trauma, or acute interpersonal trauma. Partners with early developmental trauma or acute trauma at young ages are complex to work with and take patience, and persistence from the therapist to recognize moments of exposure and self-expression in order to develop a stronger sense of self. Yet, couples therapy can be a very powerful form of therapy for alleviating shame and developing a much stronger and more integrated sense of self.

"This workshop deals with the challenges of treating clients with personality disorders, clients who, for example, fail to engage in treatment, miss sessions, feel hopeless and stuck, become angry in session, engage in self-harm, use substances, blame others, avoid homework, experience continual crises, and so on. Special attention will be paid to how to help clients get out of the ""personality disorder mode"" and into the ""adaptive mode."" Through discussion and demonstration roleplays, we'll cover identifying clients' values and aspirations, creating positive experiences and helping clients draw positive conclusions about them, engaging clients in treatment, repairing ruptures in the therapeutic relationship, applying lessons learned from the therapeutic relationship to relationships outside of therapy, learning and using adaptive coping strategies, and developing positive (i.e., more realistic) beliefs about themselves, other people, their worlds, and the future.

Carl Jung pointed out that "Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to a better understanding of ourselves." Dealing effectively with challenging relationships and interactions requires the ability to perceive and integrate a number of different perspectives, or "Perceptual Positions." The Meta Mirror Format acknowledge the fact that, typically, clients have the most difficulty communicating with others who mirror back to them what they have difficulty relating to in themselves. This workshop will show that when clients can be helped to shift perspectives and see how the problem they are experiencing with respect to the other person is really a reflection of their relation with themselves, it can bring both significant insight and new possibilities.

Extrinsic forces, centered in racism, classism, sexism, heteronormativity, ageism, ableism, and other intersecting identities impact relationships. However, they factors are not extrinsic, as we are all steeped in and operate from or are operated on, but these factors making them all too present and, unfortunately, made invisible to us as clinicians and the relational systems that we work with. The panel will define these factors, explore the power of their invisibility and impacts on relationships at the micro, mezzo and macros levels of experience and discuss their clinical implications on relational and systemic therapies.

In this golden age for models of couples therapy, therapists may wonder if they should be practicing the “one best model.” The research is clear that couples therapy models that have been tested are about equally effective, and that there are a number of key ingredients in any effective way to practice couples therapy. The presenter will describe these key ingredients that cut across models and some skills necessary to practice any model. He will argue that since this therapy is about improving relationships, the relationships we establish with our couple clients—balanced, caring, and sometimes challenging—are the heart of what we have to do well.

Short Description:
The empty chair psychodrama was first made popular by Fritz Perls, founder of Gestalt therapy. It has since been adapted into Redecision Therapy, The Developmental Model, Voice Dialogue, Family Constellation, and even Cognitive-Behavioral therapy. PACT has adapted this approach for use within the couple session when consistent projection or projective identification processes impede the forward development of one or both partners. This particular technique uses Self and Object Relations theory to capture real time archaic self and object representations that maintain an ego syntonic, regressed relationship with one (or more) original caregiver(s). The psychodrama provides an opportunity for the couple therapist to bring this maladaptive early relationship to light and to make strides toward ego dystonic rejection of the regressive behavior.

When it comes to sex issues, therapists are understandably concerned about crossing a boundary, making their clients uncomfortable, or getting outside of their scope of practice. However, when therapists shy away from bringing up sexuality, they may be missing serious (even life-threatening) issues. In this skill-building presentation, Martha will share her unique approach to bringing up sex, including how to follow up ethically and thoroughly once the topic is open. When should you refer or consult? Where is the line regarding scope of practice? What language will help both you and your clients feel comfortable? How much do you need to know about sex? How do you tell whether you’re dealing with relational issue or a sex issue? What should you focus on first? Discover the answers to these questions and more, and walk away with a set of tools you can apply in your very next session.

The process of working with erotic transference and countertransference is often avoided in clinical practice and in the training of psychotherapists. As therapists we must recognize and address that erotic transference and countertransference are significant pathways, albeit uncomfortable topics steeped in fear and defensiveness, toward greater vulnerability, healing, and the potential for growth within the clients we treat and the clinicians we long to be. This keynote discussion will begin a conversation on the process of removing fear from topics traditionally avoided within the realm of normative psychotherapy practice and parameters for their exploration within a boundaried and ethical framework will be provided.

Short Description:
One out of eleven couples has one partner with ADHD which can impact not only the individual, but also makes certain relationship dynamics more likely—and makes these couples more likely to show up in your office. Unfortunately, if the one partner’s ADHD isn’t addressed directly, the therapist will get stuck in the same traps as the partners do. We will begin with a more useful conceptualization of how ADHD impacts an individual’s abilities to meet daily demands. We will then discuss how this sets up the dynamics that commonly develop in these couples, so that you can help these clients break free of the disempowering tug of war and create a more balanced and satisfying relationship. This will include how ADHD impacts a couple’s sex life and how to make yet another area of discontent into a shared activity that adds energy to the relationship. This presentation will be full of practical strategies you can use with your next client.

Working with sexuality and the erotic behavior many people engage in today can challenge a therapist’s deeply held beliefs about sex and relationships. It can be difficult just to keep up with the impact of technology on sexual behavior, especially with the advent of sex robots, teledildonics, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality. Intensive and fun, this workshop includes videos, expert panels, and small-group discussion to help therapists face their own preconceived notions and countertransference around sex and intimacy.

Short Description:
During this time of extreme polarization in the country, political stress has invaded couple relationships. Loyalties to different political tribes create tensions, as do different ways of coping with this stressful environment. This is new territory for couples therapists, and of course we are dealing with our own distress about what’s going on the country. The presenter will offer clinical strategies for helping couples in turbulent times, along with examples of how he has applied couples therapy strategies to create community interventions to reduce polarization, via the nonprofit Braver Angels.

Short Description:
Couple therapists must be able to organize each session in such a way that allows for measuring progress in their treatment plan. One such way is to think of placing the couple and therapist in discreet “containers” or exercises that stress the couple. These exercises, tasks, or games allow the therapist to test and retest hypotheses, test a particular capacity, or otherwise allow the therapist to view couple performance in real time. These containers include a task, timing, and possible roles casted by the therapist and may include a role the therapist must also play. An example might be a psychodrama whereby partners must replay a recent event – step by step – as the therapist, as investigator, gets the facts. Or another container might involve a deal breaker issue whereby partners are required to persuade each other out of a deal breaker while the therapist plays the role of mediating only the manner in which partners argue their points.

Short Description:
Many therapists dedicate much therapy time helping betrayed partners heal deep emotional wounds in the wake of an affair. Therapy is often lopsided in a victim–perpetrator model, dealing with the injury of the betrayal. Less attention is typically paid to helping the partners who had the affair, one-night stand, or online infidelity, especially regarding why and how it happened. This workshop will give you a more nuanced understanding of the motivations for the infidelity and present practical interventions around the underlying meaning of the cheating and what it means about the relationship.

Short Description:
Most clinical conversations about couple relationship problems occur in individual therapy, not couples therapy. But individual therapy models offer little guidance for how to address relationship problems. The result is that therapists sometimes collude with their client’s view of the partner and offer one-sided narratives of complex relational problems. This doesn’t help the client and can undermine the relationship. Even couples therapists sometimes make the same mistakes when doing individual therapy. This workshop will provide specific tools and guidelines for helping individual clients in the context of their relationship, while avoiding common traps when we are seeing just one member of a couple.

The Developmental Model, or DM, is a sophisticated orientation to understanding intimate partner relationships. Organizing relational processes through the lenses of attachment theory, developmental and neuropsychology, and family systems theory the DM maintains a nonpsychopathologizing perspective while fostering interconnection through the process of differentiation. However, The DM, like many models of relational therapy, was not designed to explore the complexities and lived experiences of those with multiple intersecting identities or queer identity formation as areas of consideration and exploration in clinical practice.

For this course, we will first begin by discussing common and unique issues in working with interracial couples. We will then review what “modern isms” are and how they are enacted from one’s historically included identities. After introducing the foundational knowledge and constructs, we will consider options for addressing and naming “modern isms” and that occur within the context of the therapy room between diverse couples and between one or both members of the couple and the therapist. The instructor will share several clinical examples and discuss how she addressed the modern isms in session.

The Solution Focused Approach is known for being a questions based way of working with clients, thus the key to mastering this approach lays within developing the ability to ask questions that lead toward change. This is an even more crucial skill when working with couples due to the fact that there is more than one person present in the session. This presentation will clearly show how to ask the kinds of questions that evoke love and happiness in a couple's lives.
