Subject, patient, client, supervisor, supervised, therapist, all of us are shaped from an essence, the stuff we are made of, the hero within. After drawing up an inventory and statement of the basic heroes that we have integrated and the stories that are the ones of our deep metaphors, we will travel and explore those resources that have contributed to our construction and our structure in productive and counterproductive ways. This presentation poses a brief substance abuse treatment which acknowledges and accommodates the personal needs being addressed by substance use, bypasses perceived resistance and employs the essence of idiosyncratic psychobiological learning to achieve a body-mind gestalt complementary to the client's sobriety. Client self-empowerment and relapse prevention are built into the intervention. This method develops a safe framework for addressing any subsequent mental health themes directly or indirectly related to substance misuse. A particular form of body language known as ideomotor signaling is established in this procedure.

Short Description:
There are six core personality adaptations that form the basic building blocks of personality. These are schizoid, paranoid, antisocial, passive-aggressive, obsessive-compulsive and histrionic. Each of these has a specific way (feeling, thinking, or behavior) of making contact with the world, a target area for growth and change, and a trap area where the person has the greatest defenses. By knowing this information, the therapist can quickly establish rapport, target interventions to the area that will produce the greatest change, and avoid getting trapped in the client's defenses. This workshop will look at these six core adaptations, how they develop, and how to work most effectively with each one.

Clients can learn to reclaim comforting sleep even before the overt reasons for seeking therapy are directly addressed. The potential of individualized metaphors structured within lucid dreaming empowers clients to "seize" the night." Hypnotic techniques offer an intriguing path that bypasses a client's ingrained fear of "falling to sleep."

At last count, over 400 separate models of psychotherapy have been found to exist (Garfield & Bergin, 1994). Despite the claims and promises made by the proponents of the various treatment models, 40 years of increasingly sophisticated outcome research has not found any one model or technique superior for the resolution of the problems that clients bring into treatment, Indeed, most of the research has only confirmed "common sense" (Frank 1993). In this workshop, forty years of outcome research will be translated into practical, common sense and empirically supported therapeutic skills that you can use for the efficient and effective resolution of the problems that clients bring to treatment.

BT06 Workshop 06 - Brief Adlerian Psychotherapy - Jon Carlson, EdD, PsyDAdlerian psychotherapy is an effective brief therapy model that integrates strategies from many approaches. Adler's ideas highlight the importance of not only understanding the individual but the social context. This approach emphasizes working from a multi-cultural orientation and highlights personal responsibility. The approach uses a four-step process: Engagement, Assessment, Insight and Reorientation. The focus of treatment is positive as the therapist uses encouragement strategies to help the client identify their assets and strengths. Video-tape examples of actual sessions will be used to highlight the process and demonstrate how effective short-term change is possible with this approach.

The anxiety disorders manipulate people by injecting rules into consciousness, then using that set of laws to take over mental territory. The five anxiety disorders (phobias, panic, social anxiety, generalized anxiety and OCD) control people by generating an absolute standard for certainty and comfort. We will look at the common denominators of this game, and isolate its manifestations in each disorder. Then we will explore how the therapist can teach clients to gain ground by engineering their own tactics and strategies, including the second-order change of switching game boards altogether!

Short Description:
EP05 Conversation Hour 19 - Moral Disengagement in the Perpetration of Inhumanities - Albert Bandura, Ph.D. This presentation examines the psychosocial mechanisms by which people selectively disengage moral self-sanctions from inhumane conduct. The moral disengagement may center on redefining inhumane conduct as a benign or socially worthy one by moral justification, sanitizing language and expedient comparison with worse cruelty; disavowal of personal agency in the harm one causes by diffusing or displacement of responsibility; disregarding or minimizing the injurious effects of one's actions and dehumanizing those who are victimized and blaming them for bringing the suffering on themselves. Given the many mechanisms for disengaging moral control at individual and collective levels, civilized life requires in addition to human personal standard, safeguards built into social systems that uphold compassionate behavior and renounce cruelty.

The notion of "logical levels" refers to the fact that some processes and phenomena are created by the relationships between other processes and phenomena. The function of each level is to synthesize, organize and direct the interactions on the level below it. Changing something on an upper level would necessarily radiate downward, precipitating change on the lower levels. This presentation will cover the six basic levels of therapeutic change: environment, behavior, capabilities, beliefs and values, identity and spiritual.

For decades, psychotherapy based upon the paradigm of the individual, has focused on the intrapsychic world of the client. The focus is now shifting to the interpersonal, as a result of the appearance of the relational paradigm from the collective unconscious. This shifting of paradigms will challenge and transform the process of diagnosis and therapeutic interventions of all forms of therapy. This address will outline this historical shift and suggest its implications for therapy theory and practice.

Interpersonal neurobiology is a way to define mental health and the kinds of social experiences the brain requires to achieve a coherent mind. This interdisciplinary synthesis of science reveals an exciting convergence among research findings that helps us in mental health to explore the interplay among relationships, the mind and the brain. Experience shapes the connections in the brain in ways that we can now understand and harness within psychotherapy to help stimulate the neuronal activation and growth necessary to achieve resilience and emotional well-being.

The issue of stereotyping and emphasizing that everyone is ethnic will be dealt with, rather than approaching culture by focusing on the exotic, esoteric or different characteristics of minorities and new immigrant groups. Professor McGoldrick will demonstrate the use of genograms and family play to address cultural, racial and spiritual legacies and patterns in clinical assessment and intervention -- drawing them, interpreting them and applying them therapeutically.

Clarifying the deep structure of our identity allows us to express ourselves even more fully at the level of our behavioral surface structure. Research has already shown when a PCP can walk the patient down the hall to the BCP's office, 90% of patients engage in treatment as opposed to only 10% of referrals today. This presages opportunities for psychotherapists who wish to participate, and this workshop will address how to anticipate, prepare and avoid the pitfalls of a new integrated behavioral/primary care delivery system.

Short Description:
This talk first briefly reviews the history of the Developmental, Self and Object Relations theoretical approach to the personality disorders as a preface to exploring the latest additions to the theory, i.e., Attachment Theory and Neurobiological Development of the Self in the Right Brain. Attachment Theory: The work of Ainsworth and others is described leading to the attachment categories in the infant and the adult. Many follow-up studies are presented validating the persistence of the categories over time. Neurobiologic Development of the Self in the Right Brain: The work of Alan Schore, Ph.D. is used to describe the development of the self in the right prefrontal cortex of the brain. Integration: The integration of the two theories with the object relations approach are described and illustrated through therapeutic alliance

Hypnosis is commonly thought of as a tool to enhance the therapy. It also can be used as a "lens." The phenomenology of hypnosis can help us to understand an essential aspect of the trance state, the symptom state, the solution state and the therapist's state, thereby providing new options for treatment.

The principles of exposure treatments for anxiety disorders can be generalized to treat disorders of other emotions such as anger, sadness, jealousy, envy, shame and guilt. Short Description:
Psychotherapy practice, as we know it today, was born in World War II. Dr. Cummings was there, working with paratroopers in combat, and he has been a psychotherapist and mental health activist in the 60 years since. He wrote the first prepaid psychotherapy insurance benefit in the late 1950s and demonstrated that psychotherapy should be part of all health insurance. He has been in the forefront as an active participant in psychotherapy's achievements, setbacks and hopes for the future. This address will highlight the 60 years of psychotherapy's evolution through the life of one of its leaders.
