Addiction problems usually are treated and understood as signs of personal deficits, ego-weakness and other incompetences. In this workshop, it will be demonstrated how, from a hypno-systemic view, addictions can be understood as the result of dissociated trance states which are unconscious attempts at solution, most often in loyalty-double binds. The addiction ritual has the function of a search which expresses an unconscious knowledge about the dissociated longing for an experience of meaning and fulfillment in relationships and life. This workshop will show many hypno-systemic strategies which translate the knowledge hidden in the addiction and utilize it for healthier solutions for both personal individuation and enriching relationships.

Short Description:
A "double bind" is a special type of conflict which creates a "no-win" situation. According to anthropologist Gregory Bateson, such conflicts are at the root of both creativity and psychosis. The difference is whether or not one is able to identify and transcend the bind in an appropriate way. The most emotionally intense double binds occur in the context of significant interpersonal relationships. Such a struggle can also occur between the inner parts of a person. These types of unsolvable struggles are often at the root of both mental and physical illness. They can also arise during a person's attempts to heal and thwart progress towards wellness. This workshop will cover ways to identify double binds, the underlying conditions which create them, and some of the ways in which double binds can be resolved or transcended.

The first hour presents the foundation of this comprehensive treatment which is based on learning the principles of cognitive and behavioral therapy, and the ideas of Milton Erickson and Michael Yapko. Hypnosis is the cornerstone of this treatment because “addicts” love things that help them escape their everyday reality. Hypnosis is used to target multidimensional small changes in your patient which eventually progresses into a new and lasting lifestyle. The second hour presents a live clinical demonstration of an assessment of a person, their addictive problem and its hypnotic treatment.

This means that every client brings to therapy a unique world and therefore the challenge for every therapy is for the therapist to be able to enter the unique world of each client. This therapy method is especially adept at working with cultural differences as it is highly adaptable and therefore able to work within the unique world of the client.

This workshop will teach six positive techniques that actually make Ericksonian experiential hypnosis successful. Dysfunctional families fail to teach children how to use their experiences to succeed. Consequently, clients learn dozens of self-defeating habits and later present in our offices as adults with depression, anxiety, phobias, etc. The desire to change, insight, and motivation do not counteract those habits - nor does hypnotic suggestion create such change. Experience is the key to cure.

Short Description:
This workshop presents Dr. Gilligan’s latest work of Systemic Trance, which describes how we generate our realities via the (mostly unconscious) maps of who we are, and what the world is. These systemic filters can be held negatively (in neuro-muscular lock) or generatively (in creative flow), resulting in either problems or positive solutions. To transform problems into resources, Systemic Trance first identifies the key parts of a performance map, then uses generative trance to open a fluid conversational space where each part is positive valued and integrated into a resource pattern. Lecture, demonstration, case examples, and exercises will be included.
