Drs. John and Julie Gottman will present a state-of-the-art review of how to conceptualize and treat the highly intractable problem of domestic violence toward intimate partners. They will review the research literature and present a conceptualization of the issues in treating this population. They will describe a highly successful randomized clinical trial study and the results that demonstrate long-term follow up effectiveness.

Madanes will discuss some difficult cases and participants are invited to present their own cases for consultation and advice from Madanes. Emphasis will be on partner abuse, assessment and intervention, including cultural factors and community resources. A minimum of five to ten participants will have a chance to consult. The group will engage actively in exercises to demonstrate specific techniques.
Madanes will present strategies for preventing marital violence, from minor occurrences to severe violence. Participants will have a chance to consult with Madanes about their own cases.

Ms. Madanes will discuss strategies for working with child abuse and neglect, spouse abuse, adolescent violence, suicide prevention, sexual abuse when the perpetrator is an adult and when the perpetrator is a juvenile, and situations where violence happened many years ago. Step by step methods for preventing future violence will be presented.
This workshop describes a 22-session couples’ group intervention and curriculum for lower and middle-class couples. Each session begins with a talk-show video showing discussions with couples in poverty on curriculum topics, e.g.’ healing from infidelity, avoiding and healing from domestic violence, etc. The video is followed by group discussion, a brief teaching,and an exercise that focuses on learning new skills. Throughout most of the curriculum,, physiological soothing is taught through biofeedback. Details of the curriculum and video samples will be shown.
Current meta-analysis by Julia Babcock shows that same-sex group treatment for domestic violence is ineffective. Couples treatment is illegal in many states. We will present the results (and methods) for treating only situational (not characterological) domestic violence that shows high effectiveness with lasting effects after 18 months. Treatment utilizes Gottman-method curriculum with 21 sessions of couples group work.

Cloe Madanes will discuss love and violence in therapy and how to choose the therapeutic strategy best suited for a particular problem. She will present 25 strategies of therapy and illustrate with a videotape of her own work.
Cloe Madanes will discuss some of the varieties of abuse which can occur in a family, with an emphasis on incest and sexual abuse. A method for dealing with such situations will be presented and illustrated with a videotape.
