This workshop will demonstrate how to guide patients in having intra-body conversations. Recognizing the essential purpose of pain as an attention-getting signal, we can sponsor pain patients' compassionate listening to their pain signals as opposed to trying to avoid them, and guide them to respond in ways that are self supportive and soothing. The process also allays anxiety and generalizes to effect management.
Thirty-four million people are over 65 and that number will double to sixty-eight million within 25 years. This is a very different population, and therapy for this group must also be different. Therapy for seniors has to be brief and effective as quickly as possible. Many of the older members of our society just don't have the time or willingness to spend months awaiting change. Therapist will be encountering of the sixty-five plus population more often. This workshop will dispel some myths about aging and will present various brief treatment approaches used successfully with senior patients. We will include some brief approaches to treating grief and loss, coping with illness and pain and the depression which often accompanies these challenges.
This workshop will discuss differences between healing and treatment, and the incorporation of healing into standard psychotherapy. Methods of interweaving healing and spirituality with treatment interventions will be discussed and demonstrated in an experiential format. Exercises will be given so participants can create and experience aspects of healing useful in therapy.
This short course presents brief interventions designed to address and remove common barriers to successful treatment of pain conditions. Topics include: ways to reverse and regulate the emotional and physical impact of traumatic experiences; the necessity of medicine for the mind as well as the body; how to utilize the polyvagal nervous system in planning treatment strategy; how to help pain patients create healing connections with self, other and the divine; and how to teach people in pain to build on success. This session will include live demonstration and experiential practicum. Case consultation is welcome.
It is common to see clients who present with complex arrays of symptoms. These symptoms can be persistent or "mutate" unexpectedly, leaving patient and therapist feeling confused, frustrated and helpless. In this presentation, we will see how states of unresolved stress and trauma can be the underlying force that drives multiple elusive symptoms. These include panic, depression, insomnia, migraines, severe PMS, chronic pain, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue.
Clients in pain yearn for sleep; comfort just out of reach. Focus first on establishing soothing sleep and encouraging nocturnal restorative functions. Treating remaining pain stays in the day’s domain. Hypnosis enlists the mind and body’s natural processes, restoring healthy sleep. Strategic protocols combine physiology of sleep and pain management with the client’s own experience. These are further reinforced by self-hypnosis techniques. Program includes demonstration, application of trance script protocols, and case study discussion. With Deborah Beckman.
BT10 Workshop 04 - Radical Self-Acceptance and Self-Forgiveness - Maggie Phillips, PhD

Participants will explore the links between self-regulation, self-forgiveness, and radical acceptance. We will also explore the practice of mindfulness and hypnotic self-suggestion as ways to address imbalances while strengthening feelings of well-being and happiness. The model of radical forgiveness as a spiritual practice and as a product of spiritual intelligence will also be discussed.
