BT12 Workshop 30 – Changing the Doing, Viewing and Context: The Essence of All Brief Therapy – Bill O’Hanlon, MS After making a connection with and establishing a relationship with the client, I contend that all brief therapy relies on some variation or combination of three interventions: Changing the doing (actions/interactions), changing the viewing (focus of attention and meaning attribution/interpretation) and changing the context (the social or physical environment) involved in or around the problem. The session will give details about how to conceptualize and implement these shifts in brief clinical work.

Short Description:
BT12 Workshop 39 – The Art of Persuasion: Changing the Mind on OCD – Reid Wilson, PhD Persuading OCD clients to adopt a new frame of reference is the therapist’s primary task. Altering perception– not adding technique–helps them change directions, because belief always trumps exposure practice. Participants will learn a persuasive strategy–built out of whole cloth within the first session–that will frame the entire treatment protocol.

Short Description:
Anxiety and depression go hand in hand; untreated anxiety during childhood is a top predictor of depression in adolescents and young adults. This workshop teaches how to interrupt the patterns of anxiety and depression in children, first by recognizing what patterns need to change and then using creative and hypnotic language, homework, humor to actively make shifts happen. Concrete strategies are based on three frames that help simplify and target the patterns so common in anxiety, depression, somatic, and sleep problems.

Short Description:
In this workshop, we will explore the patterns of thought involved in how people make important life choices, especially those that carry the potential to really make a critical difference in their emotional wellbeing and quality of life. Instead of asking why and then theorizing why someone makes poor choices, our emphasis will be on how one decides to do this, not that, in especially vulnerable situations, i.e., those that hold great potential for causing psychological distress.

Short Description:
This two-hour workshop deals solely with the matter of projective identification (PI) as experienced in couple therapy. PI is perhaps one of the least talked about and most problematic issue in all modalities of psychotherapy. PI is also one of the most effective tools therapists can use to discover implicit information about the couple and accelerate the therapy forward. Attendees will learn how to become aware of this nonconscious process of communication and defense employed by all couples at some point. Through demonstration and video presentation, attendees will also learn what to do about PI – which strategic interventions will work and how to evaluate their effectiveness.

Short Description:
Recent research and insights have given a new understanding of depression, not as a deficit in chemicals, but as a problem with neurogenesis (new brain growth and connection). Antidepressants may work by promoting brain cell and neuronal growth and connection, but there are other ways, within the grasp of therapists, counselors and addiction specialists that can make an immediate and lasting difference in helping relieve depression. This session will give three simple methods for relieving depression using insights from recent brain science.

Short Description:
By virtue of our "mirror neurons", it is impossible for therapists to not be deeply touched by client's experiences. We will explore how this can be done skillfully and safely, thereby opening multiple pathways of feedback, compassion, and technical competencies. Special attention will be to mindful activation of the three "minds" of somatic, cognitive, and relational field intelligence, again with the intent of creating a deep and sophisticated conversational connection.
