This workshop will present recent developments in the application of a transdiagnostic unified, cognitive behavioral and emotion-focused approach to treating emotional disorders. This workshop will start with a brief overview of Dialectical Behavior Therapy and other efficacious treatments for suicidal behaviors and BiPolar Disorder. We will then present a series of videos of DBT applied to BPD patients with intermittent commentary and discussion of the DBT procedures as they are used in the sessions.
Research shows that brief treatments paired with hypnosis is more effective than treatments alone for many types of problems. The science and art of hypnosis is now widely recognized as a component tool for psychotherapy and has been employed successfully as a comfortable part of private practice and agency practice for years. As hypnosis spreads throughout the mainstream of psychotherapy, it is important to get competent information regarding its use. This workshop is intended to correct any lack of understanding and training in this important area. The rationale, indications and basic use will be explained and demonstrated with practical exercises to help convey the key language skills that are requisite.
Conceptually simple, MRI Brief Therapy takes seriously the idea that it is not so much problems in living that bring people into therapy, but ineffective efforts being made to resolve those difficulties that inadvertently exacerbate and perpetuate the problem into irresolvable vicious cycles. Effective brief therapy facilitates clients to Interrupt efforts being made to resolve the problem that inadvertently perpetuate the problem, and in doing so the problem often dissipates on its own.
Based on research, Gottman will discuss his new theory of how to conceptualize “trust” and “betrayal” using interdependence game theory. Trust and betrayal metrics here are not personality traits, but characteristics of daily interaction processes. He will present practical flowcharts for how couples build trust and loyalty, versus how couples build distrust and betrayal. The social skill of “emotional attunement” will be described precisely. A new therapy for preventing distrust and betrayal, and a therapy for healing from betrayal will be presented. Concepts will be illustrated with video-tape and transcripts from actual cases.

Ritualistic repetition of traditional American Indian stories creates a "scaffolding" of associations on a metacognitive level, offering a framework for problem solving. Participants will engage in story and the making of meaning. Specific clinical examples will be paired with specific stories.
The “Creative Unconscious” in hypnotherapy can be seen as residing in neither the client nor the therapist, but in the relationship between them. This workshop will explore how the therapists can use their own experiential self to develop this special relationship and use it as part of diagnosis, trance induction, creative problem solving and ongoing feedback.
The Cognitive Model of anxiety as applied to acute and chronic anxiety, post-traumatic disorders, agoraphobias, panic disorders and simple phobias will be presented.
Cognitive-behavioral strategies include identification and evaulation of dysfunctional cognition, induced imagery, induced panic attacks, and cognitive monitoring of exposure treatment. A videotaped demonstration of the treatment of panic disorders will be shown.
A multigenerational approach using co-therapy can enhance the effectiveness of family therapy. Cross-generational feedback avoids imprisonment in traditional transference. Family stress episodes can be seen as a multiprojectional process.
A brief discussion of my experience with demonstration interviews. A "client" will be selected from among those who volunteer. A thirty-minute demonstration interview will be held, followed by interaction between the group, the client and me.
