Original Program Date:

Short Description:
In the old way of thinking, stressed couples were depicted as a failed communication system of interacting pathologies that could be improved by therapists dispensing conflict resolution skills. In the new way of thinking, couples are the source of mutual healing and the fulcrum for social transformation. This lecture will discuss how that shift occurred and its implications, not only for the happiness of couples, but for the relational well-being of society.

Short Description:
Language is both informative and expressive. It is the expressive component that elicits changes in emotion, sensation, “state,” and physiology; the words only convey part of the message. We will study the effective use of prosody, proximity, gesture, expression and context, and how those channels can be woven into the process of communication to create dramatic moments that empower effective clinical outcomes. Lecture, demonstration, small group practice.

Short Description:
Building on the contributions of Milton Erickson, MD, therapists can advance their work through the introduction of evocative techniques gleaned from studying codes of influence in the arts. The artist and the therapist share similar domains: a striving to alter perception; to modify and expand perspectives; and to stir the human heart. Therapists can explore how to use untapped aspects of their medium through teasing out the connections between the palette of the artist and the traditional toolbox of the clinician.

Short Description:
Ever since Freud’s patient dubbed psychoanalysis a “talking cure,” most forms of therapy include someone talking to a professional. This workshop posits that therapy consists not so much in the action of talking but in the experience of how one is listened to while they talk, and that the more accurate name for successful therapy is the “listening cure.”

Short Description:
Couples come to therapy saying “we can’t communicate.” It sounds simple. Yet what does this really mean? Closer examination often reveals trauma, chronic hostility, narcissistic entitlement, or long-term conflict avoidance. And resolution requires internal self-development that may be resisted by one or both partners. This advanced workshop will use video segments to demonstrate the intricacies of resolving predictable communication breakdowns and supporting couples development.

Short Description:
A psychobiological approach to couple therapy utilizes a bottom-up versus a top-down approach to psychotherapy. This means that the couple’s therapist utilizes very fast, often surprising interventions in order to access implicit systems as revealed in micro expressions and micro-movements in the face and body, respectively. This workshop will introduce several exciting bottom-up techniques to use in couple therapy, including the use of surprise statements, movements, poses, and music.

Short Description:
Communicating and understanding others, beyond the verbal language, are interactional motor experiences: the Mirror Neurons are the biological base of intentional attunement and underpin the ability to perceive the difference between action and mere movement. In this experiential workshop, therapists will learn ways to successfully interweave somatic awareness techniques to facilitate their ability to listen and respond to their embodied emotions. A variety of exercises from acting techniques will be taught that promote body language for communication avoiding cognitive processes to utilize the creative resources and to improve flexibility through self-exploration and self-expression.
