- Short Description:
- Our demonstration subject for session three has two presenting issues - an undercurrent of sadness that seems to be everpresent, and a difficulty communicating about financial situations in her life. Dr. Zeig starts off the session by speaking Spanish, Karina’s native language. This simple technique puts Karina quickly at ease and sets the tone for the session. By inducing a hypnotic state Dr Zeig is able to do a quick age regression, and through utilizing a number of linguistic techniques - recursion, speaking in triplicate, altering tempo and tone of voice - he was able to seed therapeutic goals and create motivation for change.

- How often do we notice our pain, and not our comfort?! Most people only notice pain. When we pay attention to the "sensation," of pain we have a vocabulary that goes from A-Z to explain what we are feeling. For example, aching, biting, caustic, etc. However, when people think about the sensation of comfort, or attempt to describe how they are feeling without pain, they do not have descriptive language except for adjectives.

- Advances in the priming research have validated the rationale and impact of Erickson’s linguistic techniques. To wit, the priming research has confirmed that we are controlled by an unconscious behavioral guidance system more than previously conceived and, once covertly activated, unconscious goals are just as powerful as or more powerful than conscious goals. To the surprise of many, goals do not require an act of will to be acquired.

- This dialogue offers a rich, clinically grounded conversation on conversational hypnosis as a natural extension of therapeutic dialogue rather than a formal technique. Participants hear how trance emerges through attention, relationship, storytelling, and moment-to-moment attunement in individual, couple, and family work. The session examines ethics, consent, paradox, and therapist participation, showing how hypnosis unfolds through process and observation rather than scripted induction. It provides a nuanced look at how Ericksonian ideas translate into everyday clinical conversations across settings.

- The language a therapist uses to conceptualize and treat a problem determines whether or not that problem can be resolved effectively. Plato’s story of the cave, where the inhabitants see only shadows, is a useful metaphor for how the language of therapy can generate either confusion or clarity. The workshop will teach a method of effectively treating severe problems of children and adolescents, using an invariant opening question, strategic dialogue and metaphorical techniques.
