Known as The Wizard of the Desert, Dr. Milton Erickson is revered for his therapeutic genius, his brilliance as a hypnotist, and his encouragement for therapists to utilize all available resources, both their own and the clients’. One of those resources described by Dr. Erickson as a level of perception not necessarily conscious is what typically we call intuition. In this didactic and experiential workshop we will examine the therapeutic utilization of intuition from the perspective of three clinical phenomena of an Ericksonian approach.

This workshop will teach participants skills  in using metaphors and stories to help patients experience a deep contact with themselves so that they can survive and even thrive following life-changing surgery. The material will focus on Ericksonian approaches that help patients heal, experience comfort, and restore body homeostasis. Clinical examples from patients undergoing transplantation – including face transplantation – will be presented. Face transplants are extremely complex and relatively rare. They usually require many months and even years of preparation.

This workshop will provide participants with an introduction to the key concepts and techniques of practice in Ericksonian hypnosis. A brief biography of Erickson’s professional life will provide perspective on the extensive contributions he made to the fields of hypnosis and psychotherapy. Terminology of hypnosis will be explained and various approaches to induction will be described and demonstrated. The process of a typical hypnotic session will be outlined. Considerable attention will be afforded the hypnotic phenomena, the essential mechanisms in hypnotic therapy. Erickson’s landmark concepts of utilization and indirection will be explored with particular focus on the use of therapeutic anecdotes and metaphors.
