Gestalt therapy and Ericksonian hypnotherapy are experiential methods of change. In Combination they can be synergistic. Psychotherapy is best when clients have a first hand experience of an alive therapeutic process. Such dynamic empowering experiences pave the way for dynamic understandings. Drs. Those who grow up in chemically dependent families have strong survivorship skills. Unfortunately, for too many, they continue to present to the world a false self often becoming our "closeted" depressed, angry and addicted client. This workshop focuses on 1) treatment orientation and priorities, and 2) core clinical issues. Due to the managed care environment, experiential focus will be on homework assignments.
This experiential workshop will begin with a guided silent meditation. Gendlin will work with volunteers from the audience to show how to find "Focusing." The physically felt body sense of a problem is at first unclear and gradually opens and becomes clear. There will be discussion and demonstrations to show how Focusing is used in the context of psychotherapy.

There is a vast wisdom describing the capacity for self-transformation and healing central to Buddhist psychology, now a focus of current neuroscience research as well. We will delineate the principles and clinical/therapeutic applications of mindfulness, compassion and forgiveness trainings, attunement, mental health and well being, as well as the profound shift of identity that has parallels in eastern psychology and recent neuroscience research. We will explore the wedding of a spiritual psychology of the heart in tune with clinically sound modern science.
Participants will be guided through several exercises to help them learn and practice the construction of four forms of confusion technique, bring the number of indirect suggestion to six and the number of therapeutic binds to four. A demonstration using these forms will illustrate the implementations of this set of language techniques for the induction and treatment process.
In this workshop we will explore the principles and practices of Buddhist Psychology, and how mindfulness, compassion and related practices can be applied in clinical and pragmatic ways in the West.
