The assessment and treatment implications of patient victimization will be critically examined from a constructive narrative perspective. A phase-oriented cognitivebehavioral treatment model will be presented for adults with PTSD, Complex PTSD, and related co-morbid disorders. A critical analysis will be offered of various forms of so-called "memory work" interventions.
This presentation will demonstrate the heuristic value of using a Case Conceptualization Model to inform assessment and treatment decision- making ; the "art of Socratic questioning; a strength-based treatment approach and ways to implement the Core Tasks of psychotherapy. A Constructive Narrative treatment approach that focuses on the nature of the client's "story-telling" features will be highlighted.
An example of how a Constructive Narrative Perspective (CNP) can be used to explain the persistence of Post-traumatic Disorder and the treatment implications will be offered. Research implications for using a CNP will be examined.
In this video presentation, Dr. Meichenbaum works with a young woman who is depressed and who has attempted suicide seven times. She has undergone multiple traumas in her life, including rape, suicide by her mother, substance abuse. The case illustrates ways to conduct risk assessment and how to use a constructive narrative treatment approach to identify and bolster the client’s strengths and resilience.
