The classic fairytale Beauty and the Beast contains the fundamental ingredients of a relationship. This presentation introduces the "uses of enchantment" in brief marital therapy through a discussion of this ancient story. It also examines two developmental models that illustrate that journey. Awareness of archetypal forces in "couplemaking" facilitate concise, precise and to-the-point clinical interventions.
James Bugental (2000) explains the importance of focusing on immediate subjective experiences. Bugental works with Glenda who is experiencing deep guilt about an upcoming divorce. Bugental addresses questions from the audience. A second volunteer explores issues surrounding her recent career change. Bugental explains his approach and answers questions.
State of the Art Address 02:
This address suggests that what is needed in the field of marital intervention is an empirically-based theory about the disasters and masters of marriage. The theory also is an integration of behavioral, object-relations, system and existential approaches to marriage. This theory is described and presented in this address.
This hypnotherapeutic session took place in 1978, and decades later, it’s just as powerful and engaging. Enhancing the viewer’s learning experience is Dr. Zeig’s discussion of the underlying elements of Erickson’s methods: the ARE model of instruction; the art of parallel communication; targeted utilization; and the use of implication. Erickson’s fluid repertoire, drawn from systematic thinking, includes the use of anecdotes, symbolic communication, and strategic seeding. The elicitation of solutions, based on promoting constructive associations and flexible thoughts and feelings, is an area of particular interest and one in which Erickson was especially elegant.
