Longitudinal research with newlyweds shows that 67% have a drop in marital satisfaction in the first three years of their baby’s life. The Bringing Baby Home program, which will be described, is effective in preventing both these negative changes and post-partum depression.

One out of every three couples struggles with mismatched sexual desire---a formula for marital disaster. When one spouse is sexually dissatisfied and the other is oblivious, unconcerned, or uncaring, sex isn't the only casualty; a sense of emotional connection can also disappear. Helping couples bridge the desire gap can be challenging when one spouse appears unmotivated or lacks empathy. This speech presents a collaborative model for partners to work together to turn around the decline in their sex lives and reignite their emotional connection.
Adlerian psychotherapy is an effective brief therapy model that integrates strategies from many other approaches. Adler's ideas highlight the importance of not only understanding the individual but the social context. This approach emphasizes working from a multi-cultural orientation and highlights personal responsibility. The approach uses a four-step process: Engagement, Assessment, Insight, and Reorientation. The focus of treatment is positive as the therapist uses encouragement strategies to help the client identify their assets and strengths. Videotape examples of actual sessions will be used to highlight the process and demonstrate how effective short-term change is possible with this approach.
