Short Description:
In offering effective psychotherapy there are times for being informative and other times for being evocative. Use information when needed; use evocative means when the target is the realization of a concept, such as responsibility, motivation, or connection. Evocative methods are used in all performing arts because the goal is to prompt a change in mood and perspective. Evocative methods will be extracted from art and applied in clinical practice. Demonstration, lecture, practice groups.

Couples come to therapy with a myriad of complications, things like infidelity or communication issue are common issues that bring people into our offices. Managing these issues can be tricky and conducting a session that leads towards change can be even trickier. There is often a strong temptation to try to “teach” the couple how to function. However, we have to resist this urge because it doesn’t work nor does it lead towards change. In this workshop I am going to show you how to use the Solution Focused Approach to help couples create positive change in their relationship, regardless of the referral issue.

Short Description:
Contemporary minority professionals, with college degrees, positions in higher education, private practitioners, and other workspaces, often encounter dilemmas about their lack of advancement or self-efficacy. The within-group diversity among these women requires a cultural competency mindset, one that engages clients from a strength versus deficit or stereotyped-based perspective. In this workshop, participants will engage in activities to foster social identity examination as a bridge to recognizing the Latina social identities paradigm. Dilemmas that emerge because of the Maria Paradox messages, sexualized societal attitudes about Latinas, and “presumed incompetence” will be examined. Participants will leave with a guide for empowering professionals through solution-oriented culture-centered psychotherapy practices.

I will be speaking extemporaneously about the meaning of “Liminal”, which is the time between  “What was” and “What next?” The outcome depends upon how we confront this crisis of uncertainty in our personal lives as well as the crisis that we humans have brought about for humanity and the planet: Not enough trees, too many people = global warming, eventual catastrophe.

CC17 Workshop 09 - When Porn is an Issue: Couples Counseling & Psychotherapy that Works - Marty Klein, PhD We’re seeing more and more couples in conflict over one partner’s use of porn. But pathologizing one partner’s porn use while legitimizing the grievances of the consumer’s partner violates our commitment to neutrality — and more importantly, it doesn’t help the couple. To address porn-related issues more effectively, this workshop will focus on treating intrapsychic conflicts and power struggles over porn use.

Short Description:
Erickson resisted standardized hypnotic protocols because he found that everyone responded to hypnosis uniquely. Rather than seeking to force his preferred hypnotic phenomena, he cultivated whatever came naturally. Fortunately, clinical objectives, such as pain relief, can be achieved using a variety of hypnotic phenomena. This session will identify three broad classes of hypnotic experiencing and provide guidance on how to identify natural predispositions.
