Whether brief or long-term, the treatment of childhood trauma should include an opportunity for the youngster to abreact (express strong emotion), correct (find individual, community or even fantasized solutions), and to discover contexts (perspectives and understandings of the events that occurred). Dr. Terr will thoroughly discuss and exemplify these three modes of treatment, selecting brief therapies as the clinical examples.

An information processing model designed to clarify the biased and constricted thinking in depression will be described. The practical applications of the model use principles of guided discovery and collaborative empiricism. There will be a demonstration of specific strategies applied to dysfunctional cognitions and beliefs. A blending of cognitive and behavioral techniques are used for in vivo exercises.
BT12 Workshop 39 – The Art of Persuasion: Changing the Mind on OCD – Reid Wilson, PhD
Persuading OCD clients to adopt a new frame of reference is the therapist’s primary task. Altering perception– not adding technique–helps them change directions, because belief always trumps exposure practice. Participants will learn a persuasive strategy–built out of whole cloth within the first session–that will frame the entire treatment protocol.

Dr. Seligman will describe interventions that raise happiness, so defined, and will detail their effects on depression.

Dr. Meichenbaum will trace how aggressive behavior develops, and consider both the treatment and preventive implications.He will use video training films to demonstrate how to conduct cognitive-behavioral Stress Inoculation Training with angry and aggressive individuals. He will consider how to incorporate generalization guidelines into any training program.
Each couple describes a core scene which happens over and over again from which they want relief and therapists attempt to offer it. Imago Couples Therapy posits that while each core scene is unique, the theme of each couple’s story is identical: ruptured connection and the desire for restoration. All symptoms are branches on this tree. This workshop will develop and demonstrate that theme, and describe and demonstrate a singular intervention that helps couples restore connection.
Self-Image Thinking (SIT) is one of the cognitive—experiential interventions that every therapist will find useful for almost every client. The 'Tools of Intention' are best seen as techniques of positive-oriented psychotherapy. They can be practiced in therapy with or without hypnosis. These tools are protocols taken from an analysis of how minds already function but with an important twist: The protocols rely upon the cognitive experiential mechanisms can be used in harmony with both conscious and unconscious thoughts and feelings.
This workshop will present cognitive experiential and behavioral techniques to help women and men in their intimate relationships. There will be a special emphasis on personal and work-related male/female relationships and how to deal with negative reactions to "out of role" behavior, such as women's assertiveness and men's expressions of intimacy. Live demonstrations will be offered.
