Commentary by Jeffrey K. Zeig, Ph.D.

This training tool contains segments of hypnotherapy conducted by Erickson, with the same subject, on two consecutive days in 1978. Erickson demonstrates how symbols may be used as metaphoric forms of communication to foster new ideas and understandings. Dr. Zeig discusses Erickson’s techniques through lecture and both displaying examples of Dr. Erickson’s previous work with a subject (Lee).

Milton H. Erickson, MD, was an American psychiatrist who specialized in medical hypnosis and family therapy. He was founding president of the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis and noted for his approach to the unconscious mind as creative and solution-generating.

Dr. Zeig is a psychologist and marriage and family therapist in private practice in Phoenix, Arizona.
