Invited Address Session 12 Part 1 - The Self and Intimacy: A Developmental, Self and Object Relations Approach
Featuring James Masterson, MD; with discussant Cloe Madanes, Lic Psychol.
Moderated by Camillo Loriedo, MD.

The development and function of the self's capacity for intimacy is described through infancy, childhood and adolescence. The normal process of achieving intimacy is outlined. The illusions of intimacy of Disorders of the Self are then described with detailed clinical presentations of each diagnostic category. The therapeutic interventions necessary to deal with these defenses are then outlined.

 

Educational Objectives:

  1. To decode and describe the defenses against the anxiety regarding intimacy.
  2. To list the causes of that anxiety.
  3. To state the therapeutic interventions necessary with each disorder.

James F. Masterson (M.D., Jefferson Medical School, 1951) was Director of the Masterson Group, P.C., which specializes in the treatment of adolescent and adult character disorders. Additionally, he was Director of the Masterson Institute (formerly Character Disorder Foundation); attending psychiatrist at New York Hospital, Payne Whitney Clinic; and Adjunct Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Cornell University Medical College. Masterson has authored seven books and edited two volumes, mostly on the topic of psychoanalytic approaches to character disoreders and adolescents. His seminal work on the borderline personality has made him one of the most influential and studied practitioners of modern psychoanalytic methods.
