This short course addresses the advantages of specific metaphorical techniques in hypnosis and psychotherapy for treating anger, depression, chronic pain, and for boosting self-efficacy. A novel group anger treatment will be presented that combines mindfulness principles within Erickson-type teaching tales. Indirect techniques will be discussed and demonstrated.
The various aspects that contribute to low self-esteem in young women having a difficult relationship with their partner are helped with two Ericksonian techniques - - metaphors and symbolization. These aspects include healing emotional wounds, remaining at peace with their partner, learning to love themselves, working with social beliefs, limiting ideas and cultural prejudices and being responsible for their own well-being.
Participants will be guided through several exercises to help them learn and practice the construction of six forms of indirect suggestions, four therapeutic binds and four verbal confusion techniques. A demonstration using these forms will illustrate the implementation of this set of language techniques for the induction process and how they elaborate simple metaphor. Reasons for the use of indirect suggestions, binds and confusion in treatment and their effect will be addressed and demonstrated.
Participants will learn how to select and use metaphors and/or anecdotes to capture attention and stimulate an inner search for personal therapeutic meaning. Each participant will construct and experience the effects of metaphorical interventions.
There is widespread professional discomfort about entering into a therapeutic relationship with a Borderline patient. This workshop addresses suggested treatment strategies for reducing affective arousal and distress, helping to build tolerance skills and creating a collaborative non- threatening atmosphere in which the patient can learn to problem-solve and take healthy risks. A beginner's overview of Ericksonian hypnosis will be included.
Children's emotional problems are increasing. Ericksonian approaches provide good psychotherapeutical processes and efficient brief therapy for young people. A neuropsychological basis supports a coherent theoretic frame which explains the origin of emotional problems and clarifies why brief Ericksonian solutions are efficient.
The use of Conversational Unconscious Communication give the therapist a greatly enhanced ability to influence the client to generate lasting positive change. This workshop will enable the participant to learn the structure and uses of therapeutic metaphor and the interspersal technique at both the conscious and unconscious levels of the mind.
Most therapists know the tremendous value of stories as therapy with patients. However, many therapists have difficulty creating and utilizing stories of their own and incorporating them into therapy. In this workshop, participants will learn four basic elements of the story; plot, theme, character, metaphor. Then they will be able to create their own stories or borrow stories from other sources.
Guided Metaphor is a systemic approach using the clients life story as a vehicle to restructure their lives. The client is empowered to create a new life story, and this is told back to them using hypnotic language. The client literally transforms the metaphor of his/her life.
The use of ECEM (eye closure, eye movement) will be demonstrated in this session. ECEM targets negative imagery associated with anxiety and involves the use of the eye movement component of EMDR within a hypnotic context.
