Description

Description: This clinical demonstration shows how working inside a client’s own metaphor can reveal solutions that feel organic and self-generated. By carefully exploring imagery, movement, and meaning within the metaphor, the session illustrates how therapists can help clients build stability, access resources, and move out of stuck states without analyzing content or imposing interpretations.

Syllabus Description: Metaphor primarily activates the client’s sub-dominant hemisphere, and this can be utilized without knowing the content of the problem. Asking a client to discover more about their metaphor for a problem is a way to communicate directly with their unconscious understandings, which are often the keys to making useful changes.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Distinguish between a client’s guiding metaphor and a mere “figure of speech.”
  2. List the four major criteria for expanding a client’s metaphor in a useful way.
