Giulia’s story began almost 30 years ago while Milton Erickson was still with us. He offered amusingly bizarre suggestions to us about what to do with her. Those suggestions lead to several metaphors which helped her to create an escape plan from the “zoo” in which she was trapped.
This workshop will provide a unique behind-the-scenes account for applying metaphors in a case example. It will lead you through the processes of why and when to choose a metaphor intervention, how therapeutic stories may be constructed, how they can be employed to address a specific problem, what skill, strategies and techniques they can communicate, and how they can offer outcomes.

Using a video of Kay Thompson's brilliant conversational induction with a young dentist, we will explore her masterful focus: 1) by studying her own outline of how she uses words and metaphors to lead (and follow) her subject's journey from conscious to unconscious; 2) by looking at the transcript - a map of where she is going; 3) then by watching, as she journeys with her subject through various states from nervousness and confusion to wonder and joy.
Metaphor primarily activates the client’s sub-dominant hemisphere, and this can be utilized without knowing the content of the problem. Asking a client to discover more about their metaphor for a problem is a way to communicate directly with their unconscious understandings, which are often the keys to making useful changes.

Subject, patient, client, therapist, teacher, trainer, supervisor, supervised, all of us are shaped from an essence, the stuff we are made of, the hero within. This workshop will offer ways to utilize our hidden heroes, our hidden models in our therapeutic goals for inner change and help the patient build from the hero within himself/herself.
The language a therapist uses to conceptualize and treat a problem determines whether or not that problem can be resolved effectively. This workshop introduces a new model, child-focused family therapy, which is a respectful and effective technique for treating severe problems of children. This method includes a precisely worded opening question, a strategic dialogue with parents and children, Erickson’s principle of utilization, and the use of metaphor to open up solutions.
