Short Description:
Eating Disorders are a good example of massive interdependence among family members. Salvador Minuchin described families with Anorexia Nervosa as enmeshed families, and the interdependence it is certainly the base for enmeshment. Recent studies as well as more extended clinical experiences demonstrate that although bulimia appears to produce less reciprocal involvement, and some other form of apparent disengagement, we really can say that reciprocal interdependence in the family it always present, even if it assumes more hidden and complex forms.

But when struggling families arrive at your office, it is the immediate blending of these two components that allows you and the family to move quickly from overwhelmed to engaged, confused to targeted. Based on 29 years of successes and failures, this speech will offer ideas to immediately connect with families, help them untangle the tired messiness they often arrive with, and create active interventions that build momentum, create new patterns, and offer hope.

Specific direct and indirect techniques required to induce a deep and meaningful change of the most rigid family patterns will be introduced. The demonstration of a family hypnotic session will give a clear idea of the powerful and subtle resistances families can develop in the course of the hypnotic treatment as well as of how naturalistic systemic hypnosis can transform these resistances in the required solutions.

Short Description:
The most frequent complaint I hear from parents about the treatment they receive for their child's anxiety? "No one told us what to DO!" Anxiety is often generational, and by the time a family arrives at your office, they have been in the grips of the cult leader called anxiety for years. Worse yet, many of the things they have been doing, although loving and supportive, are actually making the anxiety stronger. This workshop will describe how to give families immediate and active solutions from the first session, including the use of front loading to provide critical information and understanding, changing the family's relationship with anxiety, and creating active interventions that are often the opposite of what they've typically been doing.

The Satir Model is focused on the whole human being, bringing about transformational change within the individual, family and social systems. The therapeutic process is experiential, systemic, positively directional, and change oriented. We are all part of a universal system: the Life Force that provides energy for growth. A model for growth, focused on potential, and challenging the awareness of human beings on the expression of Self and the crucial need to value self and to feel validated, Self-Esteem is the cornerstone of Satir work. Changing consciousness from competition to empowering, from self-pity to congruence. The process requires the therapist have a high level of therapeutic competence, demonstrate congruence, and provide safety and guidance. I will demonstrate, and we will practice, "The Iceberg," one of Satir’s vehicles for change, a powerful process of internal transformation.

Many therapists dread working with adolescents because of their unpredictable high risk behavior. Although adolescents may appear disconnected and uninvolved, they are extremely sensitive to family moods, expectations and conflicts and their behavior is often a refection of what is happening in the family at any given time. This family centered approach is focused on identifying and changing the triggers both inside and outside the family that lead to destructive behavior such as substance abuse, self-mutilation, violence, depression and suicidal symptoms. Guidelines for clarifying issues, correcting distortions, opening up significant areas of communication and establishing positive interactions with family members will be demonstrated with video tapes that show the step-by-step process of change.

In this hands-on, practice-oriented workshop, participants will learn a collaborative, strengths-based therapy approach that capitalizes on the strengths and resources of the adolescent, family members, concerned peers, adult inspirational others, and involved helpers from larger systems to rapidly co-construct solutions

By tapping in on the child's natural tendency for curiosity and mastery, and utilizing the natural everyday hypnotic communication patterns within the family, it is possible to create a therapeutic "hypnotic space" within the family. The use of brief hypnotherapy from a family therapy frame can help the child/adolescent disengage from the individualistic problematic view, increasing the possibility for more lasting generative changes. Special attention will be given to the role of parents as active participants in this therapeutic process.

Short Description:
Supervision and therapy are isomorphic processes. What supervision teaches is the process of creating change in people, and the very teaching of this process is itself an attempt to create change in the supervisee. Like families, therapists tend to confine themselves to selected segments of their possible repertory. Thus a major goal of supervision can be the expansion of the therapist's use of self.
