This workshop examines the distinctions among Brief, Solution-Focused, and Strategic interventions, with emphasis given to development of genuinely strategic interventions. The workshop also provides a framework for assessing clients along two important dimensions that impact therapeutic outcome: motivation and sense of agency (one’s perception of their ability to create change in their own lives).
What sets the Solution Focused Approach apart is the clinician’s deliberate focus on what the client wants instead of focusing on what the client does not want or even their presenting problem. A clinician using this approach must be comfortable enough with solution building language to be able to engage clients into a detailed conversation of their preferred future even though the client may be experience significant troubles in their life. In this workshop the presenter will demonstrate using the language of the Solution Focused Approach with clients, using video examples of real sessions, even when they are experiencing significant pain. The presenter will also lead group exercises and discussion to allow the group to practice using the skills demonstrated.
Zonefulness is the integration of mindfulness mediation, hypnotic zone exercises, and solution-oriented/strategic therapy. This workshop will enable participants to learn How To Become Smart Enough To Know When To Stop Thinking; How To Dismantle Atomic What-Ifs; and how to seamlessly access their peak performance zone. This workshop will afford participants to experience group hypnotic zone exercises, a live client demonstration, as well as a discussion of case studies. The work and influence of Dr. Milton H. Erickson will be highlighted throughout the entirety of the presentation.
You will see a model derived from Dr. Erickson's work that does not involve suggestion as the hypnotic method for creating change, but instead evocation. This gentle, empowering method avoids imposing the therapist's theories and values on the client.

Many schools of psychotherapy have been derived from the seminal work of Milton H Erickson M.D., including strategic therapy, interactional therapy, NLP and solution focused therapy. In some approaches hypnosis is central; in other approaches hypnosis is more peripheral. This class features two experts personally trained by Dr. Erickson, each of whom approach psychotherapy from somewhat different perspectives. In his approach, Possibility Therapy, Bill O'Hanlon epitomizes the strengths of a solution focused orientation. In his experiential approach, Jeffrey Zeig shades treatment in the direction of developing dramatic reference experiences.
The presentation introduces a new, solution-focused model for treating individuals/couples. The model proposes specific and clear steps on how to differentiate types of love and how these impact intimacy. Participants will develop lasting strategies on how to effectively manage personal needs in the context of the intimate relationship.
This live demonstration will show the use of Solution-Oriented Therapy (by the originator of the method), an approach to change which evokes rather than instructs, diagnoses or attempts to correct pathology.

BT12 Short Course 33 – Brief Reality Therapy: Present, Accountable, and Solution-Focused – Robert Wubbolding, EdD
Simulated role-play demonstrations, the focus of this session, illustrate the practical use of the WDEP system of reality therapy. Client self-evaluation, the core of reality therapy, as well as the incorporation of several Ericksonian principles such as utilization, are highlighted. Participants will gain information about research studies validating the use of reality therapy as well as practical and innovative ideas immediately useful on the job. Handouts suitable for photocopying will be provided.
It is the purpose of this short course to introduce and apply the concepts of both Narrative Therapy (NT) and Solution Focus Brief Therapy (SFBT) simultaneously in a therapeutic setting. The use of imagery and symbolism take the “storied” nature of problems and link them to the tapestry of all stories that a client brings into therapy. The Miracle Question looks at the “preferred view” of the problem and differentiates the singular vista of the problem against the preferred view of the client that has the vistas of the tapestry. EARS is used to give the client control over the preferred view of the problem.
Solution-oriented hypnosis derives from Erickson’s work and is concerned not with the origins of problems, but with accessing past, present and future resources to resolve problems. This session will demonstrate the assessment and treatment process involved in solution-oriented hypnosis.
