By being in the liminal space, that place where boundaries dissolve and we stand on the threshold of moving across the limit of what we were and into what we are to be, we burst into creativity and expansive perception. This workshop focuses on methods to achieve deep trance liminality through hypnosis, alpha/theta training, audio/visual entrainment and meditation.
Hypnotherapists risk frustration and failure when they strive to make something happen with clients – to induce them into trance and insti- gate change. A far more effective alternative is to invite clients into trance and co-discover possibilities of change. Participants will have opportunities to practice this collaborative approach to hypnotherapy.
This short course will use theory, techniques and group experience to demonstrate how playful self-expression, humor and self-soothing indulgent fantasy can be used in and outside the therapeutic setting to produce spiritually uplifting trance states. We will learn how to discourage "learned helplessness" and "burn out", encourage the ability to cope with life's challenges and increase opportunities to enhance the body's natural immune system functioning.
Testing individual hypnotic susceptibility and suggestions of some phenomena of deep hypnosis will be demonstrated in the frame of reference of traditional hypnosis to be compared with the experience of Ericksonian hypnotists and subjects. The technique offered will be more directive and explicit than the Ericksonian tailored approaches and metaphors.
"Hypnotic induction is not really important." Erickson agreed with this statement when I last saw him in 1979. Yet, it is important to help your client to be most receptive to therapeutic approaches such as reframing and corrective regression. We will explore, demonstrate and practice principles underlying "trance induction." Attendees will devise their own inductions and will integrate these inductions with therapeutic interventions.
People slip in and out of trance every day. Couples evoke each other into positive trances (falling in love) and negative trances (reenacting family-of-origin, unresolved issues and identifications). In this workshop we will work with five hypnotic tools to help couples transform their relationship.
The process of human growth and development occurs through a series of identity cycles. The transition from one identity level to the next is precipitated by extraordinary experiences, positive or negative in nature, that destabilize the ordinary state of consciousness. The result is a naturalistic trance or special learning state. If properly utilized, these trances lead to new, more evolved states of human being; but if not welcomed and received, violence and other forms of destructive pathology result. This address will examine this process in detail, and discuss implications for development at individual, group, and cultural levels.
Various trance inductions will be demonstrated with volunteers. Each induction will be discussed with indications for its uses. Differences between formal and conversational trances will be demonstrated with rationales for choosing each. Multiple practice opportunities will be given.

Ericksonian psychotherapy emphasizes the importance of tailoring. In this workshop, we will learn how to utilize sung trances where the client's own vocabulary, interspersal and future orientation will be used. Brief interventions will be presented while using sung trances and participants will learn how to compose their own interventions using music and hypnotic language. Audience participation will be invited.
