Description

In the conversations in this volume, Dr. Erickson expresses his basic ideas about the theory and practice of therapy. He was what Jay Haley called the first strategic therapist—even “the first therapist, since he was the first major clinician to concentrate on how to change people.” The first interviews deal not only with using hypnosis in brief therapy, but how to generate change in behavior.  Other interviews delve into the nature of communication in therapy. And while it seems odd today, in the therapy mystique of that time it was Dr. Erickson’s emphasis upon the real world and common sense that was particularly difficult to grasp.  These interviews were conducted by Jay Haley, and also John Weakland and Gregory Bateson. And they took place during Milton Erickson’s prime, beginning in 1955 as Dr. Erickson was conducted a busy practice, while traveling and teaching throughout the US.
