Description:

The Communication Theory Based Family and Brief Therapy developed by the Palo Alto Group pioneered specific techniques for quickly comprehending relationship and contextual commands and constraints inherent in how people communication about the problem they are experiencing. This demonstration will reveal how a therapist uses listening and joining skills to identify and use messages implied about the relationship nexus of which the problem is a part to join and engender constructive change.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of how to identify the relationship level aspect of messages embedded in how people describe their emotional and behavioral difficulties.
  2. Demonstrate utilization strategies in promoting effective problem resolution in interaction focused brief therapy.

Wendel A. Ray, Ph.D, is Hammond Endowed Professor of Education and Professor of Family System Theory in the Marriage & Therapy Program, at The University of Louisiana-Monroe (ULM). The former Director of the Mental Research Institute (MRI) in Palo Alto, California, as well as a former member of the MRI Brief Therapy Center, and the MRI Strategic Family Therapy Project, Dr. Ray continues to serve as an MRI Senior Research Fellow.
