Lerner will describe the key aspects of having a clear and courageous voice with a difficult partner when a relationship is stuck in silence, fighting, distance, and blame.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Explain the specific challenges that a person with a difficult partner faces in finding voice and getting unstuck.
  2. Compare defensive listening with non-defensive listening, and explain the challenge of respecting differences while clarifying a bottom line.

Harriet Lerner, PhD

Harriet Lerner, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and a contributor to feminist theory and therapy. From 1972 to 2001, she was a staff psychologist at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas and a faculty member and supervisor in the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry. During this time she published extensively on the psychology of women and family relationships, revising traditional psychoanalytic concepts to reflect feminist and family systems perspectives.
